CHAPTER ONE

  1. INTRODUCTION
    1. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

In Nigeria, an average citizen may not be able to boast of three square meals due to economic crunch that have salvaged the people over the years. The economic condition seems to be at a standstill because of certain factors that have militated against her development. Nigeria economic recession could be attributed to poor implementation of Mathematic education and lack of economic empowerment which Baro (1991) believed has entrapped most Nigerians into low economic status which has affected tremendously its national development.

Economy is activities related to the production and distribution of goods and services in a particular geographical location (Invest words, 2012). According to Wikipedia dictionary (2012), it could also be referred to as wealth or resources of a country especially in terms of production and consumption of goods and services. In view of this, the wealth and resources can only be brought to bear in the life of the people when they are economically empowered and Mathematics education is given its rightful place. The fact that Nigeria is rated as the third fastest growing economy in the world (Baro, 1991) ought to call for celebration. However, this seem not to be an exciting news because the economic growth and development plans of Nigeria have not materialised since growth and development are not synonymous.

Economic growth has to do with income per capita, employment rate, schools – electricity – hospital - airport - number of telephones per capita, road networks, and others (Okolo, 2012). These quantitative issues are to be considered in relation to qualitative facts such as level of illiteracy, state of health care and others. Even with the Nigeria growing economy being placed at 7.8 percent per annum (Gross Domestic Product-GDP), Nigeria still grapples with unemployment, inflation, low industry production, poor power supply and others.

The Nigeria economic condition calls for urgent attention as Okolo (2012) further noted that although agriculture has 7.8 percent as its contribution to Nigeria GDP, yet provides little to its revenue base, and there is unemployment, still an importer of food and a culprit to inflation growth. The government and non governmental agencies need to give this an urgent attention. Activities that can help cushion the sorry state of Nigeria national development need be given due consideration. One of such activities is empowerment.

  1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Mathematics helps the man to give exact interpretation to his ideas and conclusions. It is the numerical and calculation part of man’s life and knowledge. It plays a predominant role in our everyday life and it has become an indispensable factor for the progress of our present day world which can lead to economic growth of Nigeria. Negligence of mathematics subject in the secondary school level may be one of the results which gave rise to the study. Most people do not see the need of taking the study of mathematics serious in their secondary school level due to the normal saying “mathematics is too difficult” and so because of this mentality they forget about taking the subject seriously, not remembering that there is nothing you venture into that the use of mathematics will not be needed, be it tailoring, or an entrepreneur etc. Secondly, it could be that there are no qualified and competent mathematics teachers in the school to teach the students effectively so that they can develop interest and passion for mathematics, thereby giving them the morale for further studies of mathematics related courses which will later benefit the economy in one way or the other. Finally, several researches have been carried out on mathematics education and economic growth but not even a single research has been carried out on the contribution of mathematics to economic growth in Nigeria.

  1. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The main aim of the study is to examine the contribution of mathematics to economic growth. Other specific objectives of the study include:

  1. to determine the effect of mathematics on the economic growth of Nigeria.
  2. to determine the factors affecting mathematics and economic growth of Nigeria.
  3. to determine the relationship between mathematics and economic growth of Nigeria.
  4. to determine the extent to which mathematics affect the economic growth of Nigeria.
  5. to determine the influence of mathematics on the economy of Nigeria.
  6. to proffer possible solution to the stated problems
    1. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1.     What is the effect of mathematics on the economic growth of Nigeria?

2.     What is the factors affecting mathematics and economic growth of Nigeria?

3.     What is the relationship between mathematics and economic growth of Nigeria?

4.     What is the extent to which mathematics affect the economic growth of Nigeria?

5.     What is the influence of mathematics on the economy of Nigeria?

6.     What is the possible solution to the stated problems?

  1. STATEMENT OF RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0:    Mathematics has no significant effect on the economic growth of Nigeria.

H1:         Mathematics has a significant effect on the economic growth of Nigeria.

1.6   SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study on the contribution of mathematics to economic growth will be of immense benefit to the entire Nigeria in the sense that government will be able to carry out census accurately, this cannot be done except when you have a competent mathematical personnel who really understand the rudiments of mathematics. It will also enable for the effective balancing and presentation of federal accounts by the accountants and auditors. In the secondary schools, government will see the necessity of employing qualified and competent teachers in secondary school which will encourage and teach the students effectively for the benefit of the economy and while provision of other means of making mathematics interesting and fun to learn should be done by the school authorities.

1.7   SCOPE OF STUDY

The study on the contribution of mathematics to economic growth is limited to Nigeria.

1.8   LIMITATION OF STUDY

Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

1.9   DEFINITION OF TERMS

Contribution   The part played by a person or thing in bringing about a result or helping something to advance.

Mathematics   The science of structure, order, and relation that has evolved from counting, measuring, and describing the shapes of objects.

Growth    The process of increasing in size
