1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Over the years the ownership of smart phone and the rate of exposure to pornographic materials nexus have increased overtime in Nigeria. The introduction of smart-phone technology in Nigeria, has been a good news for both teenagers and adults today, saying that the advent of Smartphone has made it possible for them to do part of their job with nothing more than a phone (Belmaker, 2003). But most of the younger generation prefers other activities such as pornography on their smart phones.

All of us have become teenagers at one time. It does not matter whether our teenage phase is good or bad. It is that period of time which is really fantastic and amazing. It is a phase of self-learning and learning about other people’s lives. Because at this phase of life, people especially teenagers start knowing and learning to digest the reality and fantastic life as imagined by them. Lack of family and community support will cause teenage destruction.

Pornography is an interesting subject of discussion. Previously, pornography was considered a taboo in the society, but not anymore. This is because it is frequently spoken about and debated publicly in many places and media as simple as via mobile phone conversations. Porno comes from a Greek word ’pornea’. Pornography means ’stories of a prostitude’. If the word of ’pornography’ is written on a blank paper, we will get various perspectives and explanations regarding human life today. Pornography is still a public debate, and no one has any idea to stop people from talking about it. Moreover, no one can really say it is prohibited in other people’s lives. The materials of pornography are springing up like mushrooms after the rain in the mass media especially online, which is as easy as only a click on the mouse.

In fact, as individuals, we are born with different nature and desires as humans. No doubt that pornography itself is included in the list and it is difficult for individuals to avoid and eliminate it all especially in the young generation. This is actually a serious mental sexual disease and it has inflicted our young society. The Y generation is extremely expert in searching, viewing even exploring pornography to a point which juvenile delinquency can happen. In the year 2014, the number of juvenile offenders by the state in Malaysia has increased up to 5,096 while 371 cases were repeated offences (Malaysia statistics, 2015). Individuals nowadays are dealing with battles of the mind whether to accept or reject pornography as these materials are easily accessible regardless of whether they are from the print, electronic or online media.

1.2 STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

The prevalence of pornography is becoming more serious in adolescents with the existence of smartphones which are affordable to every individual in the present. We are aware that the mass society is now wise enough in choosing a smart technology to obtain any necessary information to satisfy their needs. The issue of pornography is not a new thing. Sulistyowati Irianto (2006) states that pornography is an action that can generate obscenely and sexually stimulation to the audience it is exposed to and can be exploited in their daily lives. Communication technology developments in the world of the Internet have opened up a new chapter that extends to the pornography industry making its existence more common and wide. Pornography on the Internet is also known as ' cybersex ', which is a situation that promotes the use of the Internet as a media outlet for distributing pornographic activities to the public. Each pornographic site and blog have their own goals and objectives. In fact, the use and dissemination of pornographic materials using smartphones are becoming more common among adolescents and very serious as well. Pornographic materials can also become viral among teenagers and be a shared ‘hot topic’ with others. Although several studies on pornography have been carried out, most studies often touched on the perception of perpetrator nudity, pornography and behavioral research involving support violence against women. At the moment, no studies have been found to examine ownership of smart phones and exposure to pornographic materials among female students. However, some studies did touch on the impact and influence of the Internet on the society as a whole and include views on the issue (Muhammad Adnan, 2013).
