CHAPTER ONE

  1. INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The primary functions of the mass media are to inform, educate, and entertain and also to enlighten. The various mass media (magazines, television, internet, newspapers, etc.) have the power to direct our attention towards certain issues and this is evident in the Agenda-Setting function of the mass media. Studies (Gadarian, 2010; James & Waldman, 2003; Okoro & Chukwuma, 2012; Ekwueme & Obayi, 2012) have shown that media coverage affects how the public learns, understands or thinks about an issue.

Gadarian‟s study has shown that the reaction of people to terrorist attacks is influenced by the tone of coverage of those attacks. Gadarian (2010) concludes that the emotional content, not simply the factual information in media reports, has a sizeable and statistically significant influence on attitudes. Subjects exposed to media reports with emotional content were more likely to support the use of military force, support spending on foreign policy, and approve of specific counter terrorist and foreign policies.

Studies in media framing (Nacos, 2007; Powell, 2011; Bruken, 2006; Chong & Druckman 2007; Nelson, Clawson & Oxley, 1997) continue to support the opinion that the media draw the public attention to certain topics and decide what people think about. These studies argue that the way in which news is presented, and the attributes used in the presentation, is a deliberate choice made by journalists.

Boystun, Gross & Resnik (2004, p.2) argue that the way media organize and media gatekeepers systematize and present the events

and the issues they cover, and the way audiences interpret what they are provided with, are products of media framing. Okoro & Odoemelam (2013, p.86) add that the act of framing shape perception of key events. Framing is a key concept in the study of press performance and regular assessment of this performance is necessary in order to determine its ramifications (Omojola, 2007).

Journalism in Nigeria has continued to grow immensely in line with global trends despite strong infrastructural challenges. Communicating with a mass audience is not totally strange in Nigeria. As far back as 1859, the first newspaper Iwe Irohin made a triumphant emergence on the stage with the entrepreneurial but religious Henry Townsend. He had exploited the relatively high literacy rate in Abeokuta and its environs in South West Nigeria, to introduce a newspaper. From its rudimentary or crude stage, the newspaper grow rapidly. Even though the newspaper did not last for too long, it had made an important statement about the fact that newspaper should be published. Indeed, it became an encouragement to other newspapers which followed in quick succession.

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Nigeria’s security challenges in this democratic setting, the greatest security challenge Nigeria is imposing impunity of terrorist activities of the Boko Haram. Since the media stands as a mid-man between government and the masses, the government should be able to listen to them. The challenge of the study could be that the government tends to ignore the information brought to them by the media and so they might lack the way to attack the Boko Haram in time before they strike just for the safety of the masses. Finally, several researches have been carried out but not even a single research has been carried out on newspaper coverage of Boko Haram crisis in Nigeria.
