INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Trust is an important factor for successful online transactions and is also a key to attracting, retaining, and also influencing more Nigerians to shop online. Therefore, to encourage and strengthen the confidence of Nigerians towards online-shopping, sellers needs to provide trust-related mechanisms. A stable and secure payment system, unambiguous privacy protection policies are some of the practices to build customers institution based-trust (Bliss: 2000).

Online shopping, also known as electronic retail all over the world is a business design that allows a firm or an individual to conduct business over an electronic network, specifically, the internet (Adigigwe 1980).E-commerce functions in all these market segments: business to consumer, business to business, consumer to consumer, consumer to business. This is a more advanced form of mail-order purchasing through a catalog. All kinds of products can be offered via e-commerce, from books and music to financial services and plane tickets.

Ecommerce has allowed firms, individuals to establish a market presence by providing a cheaper and more efficient distribution chain for their products or services. An example of a firm that has successfully used ecommerce is Amazon. This mass retailer has an online store where the customer can buy everything from clothes to coffee makers to action figures. Once you purchase a good or service online, you are participating in ecommerce.

Online shopping has become a growing trend in the retail world today, particularly indeveloped nations like Nigeria. Statistics show that the amount of shoppers purchasing online are rising andthe quantity of their purchases is also increasing rapidly (Okoro 1990).

Years back e-commerce blew up and significantly transformed a good number of the retail environment. Consumers are using the internet not just to buygoods and services, and also to browse online shops or to attain knowledge about potentialpurchases (Blessed 1993). The atmosphere in online shops is also becoming an important factor to consider formarketers when looking for ways to satisfy the consumers. There is evidence to prove that online retailing is likely to be seen as a complement orsubstitute to offline retailing.
