CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The idea of packaging plays a significant role in the sales volume and customer’s satisfaction in the service industry. Service industries have long been regarded as industries with little scope for the use of technical systems, poor productivity improvements over time and a mainly local orientation (see, for example, Miles 1996 and Miles and Boden 2000).

Most of the firms in the services industry in Nigeria spend more time on packaging for their products but they failed to create a product-service system that has become increasingly important as value adding is consumer packaging, since packages shape the user’s experience of product use as well as accelerating and affecting the first purchase decision.

According to (Löfgren, M. 2005) point out the importance of a package to add value to the consumer in the first moment of truth, i.e. in the purchasing situation, and in the second moment of truth, i.e. in the usage of the product at the point of consumption and recycling. With this value adding perspective, there is strategic evidence that viewing packaging as a central value carrier and as a product service system, from the perspective of the users, will benefit producers.

The above incidence is seen in most of the Shoprite in Nigeria; in order to enhance sales volume and customers’ retainability by most of the shoprites; there have been series of added value to customer experience; it is evident that the introduction of pharmacy services, money services like the availability of POS inside the shoprite, ATM machines outside the shoprite have significant effect on the rate of patronage and increase in sales volume in most of the Shoprites.

According to (Preissl 2001) stated that the introduction of E-business in the service industry does not only change service provision in the supplier companies, it also affects the typical features of service markets.

The role of E-business in the service industry has increased the possibility of storing services in the form of information removes the constraint of time in the provision of services. Services can be delivered via electronic networks without the physical movement of either supplier or client. As a consequence, a global reorganization of service companies has been expected (see Bressand 1986; Daniels 1993). The study in this regard wishes to examine the role of packaging in the service industry using shoprite warri as the case study.

1.2 STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

The need for the research on the role of packaging in the services industry was due to increase rate of dissatisfaction among customers in most of the shoprites in Nigeria. Some of these dissatisfactions were seen in the area of unavailability of POS in the service department of the shoprites, thereby limiting the use of cashless policy by most of their customer; the above mentioned will have affect sales volume and the rate of patronage. Secondly, for security reasons, there is suppose to be a kind of free medical services for minor injuries (that is if there is any); but this found lacking in the shoprites.
