1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

In Nigeria there are basically two types of salad; the vegetable salad and the ordinary salad made with bama and other ingredients. Everything in salad is made fresh and natural. Salad is very import for the well being and proper functioning of the organs in the human body especially the digestive systems and mechanism. There are several ingredients required in making salad; such ingredient includes:

 Medium size cabbage

4 medium size carrots

Lettuce leaves

2 cups of chopped green beans

Half cup peas (optional)

3 cooked eggs

One can of baked beans

2 big size of cucumber

Salad cream (heinz, BAMA mayonnaise)

The combination is very tasty and nutritional. The research work centered on the addiction of sprite to vegetable salad. Sprite is a drink with a very simple gas effect when drinking it. It feels like taking glucose dissolved in water in a concentrated form. Sprite is the leading lemon and lime soft drink in the whole world; the drink is manufactured in Germany in the year 1959 with the initial name as ‘Fanta Klare Zitrone’ when 7up came into existence it became the world’s favorite drink; coca cola now took it up to manufacture a drink that will match up with 7up; that’s when the name sprite gained fame.

In the year 2012, Sprite was reformulated in France, removing 30% of the sugar and replacing it with the sweetener Stevia, lowering the total calorie count.

People’s addiction to sprite to vegetable salad could be as a result of choice and what they feel like to take at the moment; most people might not feel like to eat anything solid; they prefer something soft. Sprite is easy to take than other soft drink because of the ease to take it. The gas content of sprite is lower than the rest of the soft drinks. Sprite has a very relaxing taste and most people prefer taking drinks with lesser gas during hot weather than those with higher gas.

Salad is a kind of appetizer but most people do not like the taste of bama; so they prefer to take soft drink; especially sprite because it feels cool on drinking.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The problem of addiction to sprite is growing on daily bases; 30% of diabetics patients were found to addicted to sprite. The level of addiction is on the high side; sprite is very nice and tasty soft drinks that boost energy after a very stressful day; from a bottle to two; the count keep increasing. The taste of sprite made it feel so easy to drink; the effect of the addiction to sprite has being the major problem of most sprite consumers. Every day the health hazard from the intake of sprite keep increasing because find it difficult to stop drinking it. As an appetizer people prefer drink to salad, they see salad as a kind of food and not appetizer, the salad cream (bama) taste differently to different people; most people hate salad as an appetizer they prefer something soft, tasty and fludy; so the opted for sprite since it has less acid.
