CHAPTER ONE

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

As the educational sector of Nigeria continue to improve, the expectations from teachers continue to increase; all teachers are expected to carry out their duties as required by the management of school the result of these high expectation due to tension results to stress among the teachers; this effect is usually high among the secondary school teachers. Most of the teachers that are nursing mothers tend to become ineffective as a result of the stress from home and in their work environment; the influence of stress on the job performance of teachers has grown overtime.

According to Mason (1975) in his research work stated that stress was approached in four ways; which are as a result of stimulus or external force acting on the organism, or responses or change in the psychological functions, he also stated that it could be external force and resistance opposed to it and comprehensive phenomenon encompassing all these.

The teachers as we all know serve one of the most technical and stressful professions; according to (cooper and Marshal, 1978) stated that stress has been found to be costly to the individual as well as to the institution where he/ she works.

It is evident that the key element in the definition is the teachers’ perception of threat based on all the listed of his or her job circumstances; in other words the demand from his or her job could not balance with his or her mental well-being which in turn resulted to stress.

Most teachers are always exposed to threats, physical abuse because most of the schools are usually located in an isolated environment.

Teachers must be aware of their job role which is to build up a nation; we all know that teachers are over burdened with regular teaching load; so there is need for occupational satisfaction either from the federal government through Nigerian union of teachers (NUT) to see to the social well-being of teachers. It is this regard that study uses the Abuja municipal area council as the case study
