CHAPTER ONE

  1. INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND OF STUDY

First Aid provision should be seen as part of the wider management of health and safety at work within Faculties, Schools and Departments in the University. The requirements within any Faculty/School/Department will be determined by the hazards associated with the work and the numbers of people at risk.

These will then determine the type, quantity and location of first aid facilities and personnel that will best meet the risks associated with the nature of the work.   In case of an accident, injury, or sudden illness, first aid delivered by bystanders can save lives and limit damage until professional help has arrived.

Wiese CH, Wilke H, (2008) Laypersons trained in first aid can also potentially reduce delays in seeking medical assistance. The latter is also potentially lifesaving because in emergencies time may constitute a critical determinant of victims’ outcomes. Recently, the potential value of first aid training for laypersons has assumed a heightened importance in the context of both manmade and natural mass casualty incidents and disasters.

When a sudden disaster strikes, survivors often constitute the sole source of initial help to others because professional help takes time to mobilize or is insufficient. Altintates KH.,(2005). Reports from the recent bombings in New York and London state that first aid by bystanders might have saved lives.  In the Madrid bombings, 67% of the injured persons arrived at the hospital in non ambulance vehicles. Victim transport by bystanders occurs in many mass casualty disasters if ambulance transport is lacking.

First aid training can reduce the risks of private victim transport and provide laypersons with guidance about when not to move a victim.  After the Armenia and Kobe earthquakes, bystanders provided only minimal first aid efforts.

Officials interviewed after the disaster strongly agreed that first aid training for laypersons would likely decrease death rates in similar events. Conversely, in disaster preparedness efforts, emergency personnel and authorities often disregard the potential role of individual laypersons.

Starc B, Pecan M. (1996) Although laypersons rarely panic or develop psychological shock in disasters, the emotional stress of the situation can temporarily limit their reasoning ability. Wiese CH, Wilke H, (2008) Experts widely advocate layperson first aid training as a way courses to be offered to the community at large, to courses limited to target groups such as workers, professional drivers, family members of high risk individuals, or citizens living in disaster-prone areas.

Adeyemi-Doro (1983) Given the increased premium on layperson first aid skills under conditions of disaster and the consequent likelihood of substantial increase in resources devoted to training efforts, the evaluation of effectiveness of such training assumes paramount importance.

Such evaluations need to assess whether course participants acquire appropriate attitudes, competences, and behavior for first aid provision. This implies that course participants demonstrate a positive attitude and helping reaction toward emergencies, and furthermore that they can assess the situation, ensure safety, assess the condition of the victim, get help if required, and administer first aid and provide emotional support to victims.

Published reports of effectiveness of first aid training are scattered across a large array of biomedical journals published in different languages and in journals associated with different practice specialties, making it difficult to derive a valid assessment of current knowledge in this area. Wiese CH, Wilke H, (2008).

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

First Aid is the initial care provided to a casualty and is usually given by someone ‘on the spot’ of the incidence. Most often, a person administering first aid is often not a qualified health care professional and is not expected to perform the duties of one.

It could also that there is no availability of first aid equipment for the first aider to administer first aid treatment for the patient before been taken to the hospital. It could also be that there is no specialized hand at the venue of the incidence.

It could also be that the governments do not fund the health care sector with first aid equipments which could also lead to the unavailability of first aid equipment as at when needed. Finally several research has been carried out on first aid and accident prevention but not even a single research has been carried out on a survey on availability of first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories in ingawa L.G.A  of  kastina  state, Nigeria.

1.3   AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The main aim of the study is to examine the availability of  first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories in ingawa L.G.A of kastina state, Nigeria. Other specific objective of the study includes;

  1. to investigate the factors which could affect the availability of first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories in ingawa L.G.A  of kastina state, Nigeria.
  2.  to determine the relationship between first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories in ingawa L.G.A of kastina state, Nigeria.
  3. to determine the effect of first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories in ingawa L.G.A of kastina state, Nigeria.
  4. To proffer possible solutions to the problems.

1.4   RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. What are the factors which could affect the availability of first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories in ingawa L.G.A  of kastina state, Nigeria?
  2.  What is the relationship between first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories in ingawa L.G.A of kastina state, Nigeria?
  3. What is the effect of first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories in ingawa L.G.A of kastina state, Nigeria?
  4. What are the possible solutions to the problems?

1.5   STATEMENT OF RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0:  there is no first aid box and accident prevention instructions in Ingawa L.G.A of katsina state.

H1: there is first aid box and accident prevention instructions in Ingawa L.G.A of katsina state.

1.6   SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study on a survey on availability of first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories in Ingawa L.G.A of Kastina state Nigeria, will be of great benefit to the entire Ingawa L.G.A of Kastina state in the sense that it will  educate the government on the importance of the provision of first aid kits equipments and first aider workers in the local government to assist any accident victims in the local government. It will also help by educating the people of Ingawa L.G.A the need to immediately carry any accident victim to the health care center for the first aider to attain to the patient. Finally the study will contribute to the body of existing literature and knowledge to this field of study and basis for further research.

1.7   SCOPE OF STUDY

The study on a survey on availability of first aid box and accident prevention instructions in BST laboratories is limited to ingawa L.G.A of kastina state, Nigeria.

1.8   LIMITATION OF STUDY

Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

1.9   DEFINITION OF TERMS
