CHAPTER ONE

  1. INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND OF STUDY

It is a fact that language remains the medium of communication in any society. Nigeria, as a multilingual society, has adopted English Language as its lingua franca to enable its over 450 ethnic groups to mutually communicate. This suggests why Bamgbose (1971) asserts that of all heritage left in Nigeria by the British colonial administration, probably none is more than English in value and importance. It is now the language of government, business, education literature, mass media....

Despite the importance attached to English Language in Nigeria’s educational sector which trains correspondent reporters, there has been so much worry and concern over the problem of errors in the use of English of correspondents, particularly the spoken aspect of the English Language, which, interestingly, is the obvious tool that broadcasters use to communicate to the masses.

Okpara (2001) opines that the central problem of errors committed by second languages users is in the concept of interference; which is the trace left by someone’s native language, mother tongue (MT) upon the foreign language (FL) he or she has acquired (Quirk, Greenbaum, Leech, Svartvik, 1972). This follows that some Nigerian broadcasters are highly likely to be haunted by the problem of mother tongue interference.

However, it should be assumed that this problem is tackled in-house before such a broadcaster is allowed to face the world on television. They should be allowed to conquer their intrusion before they come on air. The last sentence, ideally, should be what is expected but scholars argued it is rather absurd to see trained correspondent reporters, some, senior correspondent reporters committing serious errors as a result of mother tongue interference on television; an avenue with over one thousand viewers.

These viewers include secondary school students who may hope to improve their spoken English by listening to broadcasters. This is so because television broadcasting houses are seen as yardsticks for measuring well polished standard speakers of English.

Language is a means of communication and it contributes in no small measure to national building and development. It provides us with not only just a mode of interaction, but also with a capacity of representation. Everybody knows that language concerns the everyday lives of people their social interaction, economic, political and developmental situation.

Language is a socio cultural phenomena on which have the characteristic role of communication as well as being an index of group’s identity. For language to be functional, it has to perform a communicative role. According to Farinde and Ojo (2001), they cited Gimson, stating that: language is a system of conventional vocal symbol used for communication by a whole community. Language is characterised by a set of vocal sounds which can be decoded.

According to Akindele (1999) stated that, language is a system of symbol or vocal system by which human being communicate experience. Language helps human beings to express their feeling and thought to one another. According to Gimson (2000) “language is the institute whereby humans communicate and interact with one another by means of habitually used oral-auditory arbitrary symbols”.

Language issues are therefore very important and sensitive because it touches the identity and ego of members of the community and thus posses’ problem. According to Ojo (2005) in introduction to sociolinguistics citing Gumperz (1968) defines speech community thus. “Speech community can be defined as most groups of any performance, be they small bands bound by face to face contact, modern nations divisible into smaller sub-regions even occupational association or neigbourhood gangs”.

Also citing Olumuyiwa (1997) defines a speech community thus. “Speech community can be defined as a group of people or individual using then same language or linguistic signal”. The Nigeria speech community is made up of many ethnic groups. The ethnic have various local languages, which serve restricted local need. The languages are mutually unintelligible.

Multilingual speech community is a community where here or more languages are in use. Nigeria is an example of such with more than 250 ethnic group with a conservative estimate of 400 languages (Olagoke 1981 and Aziza 1998) it is therefore a multilingual and multicultural speech community whereby diverse languages and culture complete.

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The usage of mother tongue in the society of some secondary schools in Eket local government area is totally prohibited; this is because the general language is what is being used in the outside world and the continuous usage of this dialect might be a serious harm to the students. The challenge could be as a result of inability for the teacher in question to explain adequately the true meaning or give an accurate definition of something in English language, it could also be that the students are not given punishment for the use of vernacular in the school premises thereby making them speak anyhow they want to which might eventually affect them during writing examination. Finally, several research has been carried out on the effect of vernacular usage in secondary school but not even a single research has been carried out on the effect of mother tongue, indigenous languages and society on some selected secondary schools in Eket local government area.
