CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

From the beginning of history, human sensitivity has revealed an urge for mobility leading to a measure of Society's progress. The history of this mobility or transport is the history of civilization. For any country to develop with right momentum modern and efficient Transport as a basic infrastructure is a must. It has been seen throughout the history of any nation that a proper, extensive and efficient Land Transport has played a major role (Anyanwu et al, 2007). ‘Transporters' perform one of the most important activities, at every stage of advanced civilization. Where lands are considered as veins and arteries of a nation, passenger and goods transported are likened to blood in circulation. Passenger Land Transport Service (PLTS) is an essential connected to the economic development. Transport is the essential convenience with which people not just connect but progress. Throughout history, people's progress has been sustained on the convenience, speed and safety of the modes of transport. Land transport occupies a primary place in to-day's world as it provides a reach unparallel by any other contemporary mode of transport.

In the same vein, Ukwu (2005: 116) asserted that transport and communication are critical to modernization because of their impact at various levels of social, political and economic growth and development. According to him, they channel the flow of persons, commodities and ideas between places and over time and mediate relations and interactions between individuals and communities. And Anyanwu et al (2007: 333) summed, concerning the importance of transportation to the modern economy thus:

The importance of transportation derives from a number of factors. For instance, it increases the geographical and occupational specialisation as well as interdependence of countries based on the principle of comparative advantage. In fact, improvement in transport provides more opportunities for specialization. This largely account for the remarkable improvement made so far in the development of commerce and industry since transport lies at the root of the whole process of marketing. Consequently, it leads to an enormous increase in the volume of trade, making it possible for increased and concentrated population to survive and for them to be provided with wide and more varied diet. In addition, transportation facilitates the quick deliveries of perishable and non-perishable goods. As a result, capital need not be tied up in large stock of goods since quick deliveries can be made, making large-scale production possible. Thus, the role of transportation in every modern economy cannot be over emphasized

Nigeria as a nation state started as a colonial creation in 1914 and evolved through colonial rule up to 1st October 2000 when political independence was granted her by her colonial master-Great Britain. From 2000 till date she has, as a nation state launched a number of development plans and programmes. For example, she launched her first 5-year plan in 2002-2008; a second, third and fourth in 2000-2004, 2005-2000, and 2001-2005 respectively. She has instituted a one year Economic Emergency Programme in 2006 which was later absorbed by a two-year Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) that ended in 2009. She has adopted a 15-20 year Perspective Plan with a 3-yearly Rolling Plans that were complemented by annual budgets in the 2000s. She has also published Vision 2010; and recently NEEDS, SEEDS and LEEDS at the national, state and local government levels respectively, all in attempt to achieve national development.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Transportation is very essential for effective communication, mobility and transportation of goods and service which may have significant effect on the economic growth in Nigeria. But the nature of the Nigeria road is a major clog on the wheels of effective transportation. Most of the Nigeria roads have port holes; some are not motor able.  These will cause delay in goods delivery and thus may have effect on the economic growth in Nigeria.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The main aim of the research work is to determine the relationship between land transportation and economic growth in recessionary Nigeria. Other specific objectives of study are:

  1. to determine the extent to which land transportation has improved the economy of Nigeria from 2001 to 2016
  2. to investigate on the factors affecting land transportation in Nigeria
  3. to examine whether land transportation helps in the control of recession in Nigeria
  4. to proffer solution to the problems of land transportation in Nigeria

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The study came up with research questions so as to ascertain the above stated objectives of study. The research questions for the study are:

  1. To what extent has land transportation improved the economy of Nigeria from 2001 to 2016?
  2. What are the factors affecting land transportation in Nigeria?
  3. Does land transportation helps in the control of recession in Nigeria?
  4. What is the way forward to the problems of land transportation in Nigeria?

1.5 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0: there is no significant relationship between land transportation and economic growth in recessionary Nigeria

H1: there is significant relationship between land transportation and economic growth in recessionary Nigeria

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study on the relationship between land transportation and economic growth in recessionary Nigeria will be of immense benefit to the logistics company, the government (local, state and federal). To the logistic company, the literature of the research work will discuss on the states with good road network; this will enable them channel distribution towards that direction. For the government, the study will show the nature of the relationship in terms of the contribution of land transportation in controlling recession in Nigeria. The study will serve as a repository of information to other researchers that desire to carry out similar research on the above topic. Finally the study will contribute to the body of existing literature and knowledge in this field of study and provide a basis for further research

1.7 SCOPE OF STUDY

The study will cover on the relationship between land transportation and economic growth in recessionary Nigeria from 2001 to 2016

1.8 LIMITATION OF STUDY

Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (statistical data).

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Road Transportation: This means the movement of goods and passengers from one place to their destined places with the use of vehicles that poly the roads.

Population: According to Hornby (2005) defines population as the number of people living in a place, or country. Population is also defined as the total number of people in particular geographical areas recorded or otherwise.

In the light of the explanation given above, effect of population on road transportation can be defined as the force exerted on road transportation

Recession: a period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activity are reduced, generally identified by a fall in GDP in two successive quarters.

GDP: gross domestic products
