INTRODUCTION

  1. Background of the Study

Menstruation is a phase every teenager and woman must experience, and it is as old as time. For some ladies, this monthly flow is easy and smooth; while for some it is accompanied with pains called ‘menstrual cramps’.

Menstrual cramps are severe abdominal and pelvic pain women experience during menstrual flow. It is pertinent to know that about 60% of women experience menstrual cramps and among these, up to 20% of them have severe menstrual cramps. Severe to an extent that they cannot walk, eat, work, and even have a sound sleep; these lead to the concept of ‘menstrual leave’ at work.

The concept of ‘menstrual leave’ was first discovered in Japan in the late nineties. Japanese Labor Standard enacted a law in 1947, permitting women to take days off work due to menstrual cramps; and still be paid. This made other countries buy the idea of giving women off from work while on their period, examples of such countries are: Indonesia, Korea, Philippines, Russia, etc.

However, some countries don’t go down well with the idea of giving women off from work because of menstrual cramps as they are of the opinion that it will lead to unproductiveness; while some countries believe that any employee who has any form of pain while at work, as long as that fellow is feeling uneasy should be allowed to go home and have some rest. It has been discovered that women have some psychological breakdown like: bloating, cramps, fatigue and discomfort when they are on their period.

In addition, they have some physiological effects like high temperament, extra aggressiveness, mood swing, impaired psychology, arrogance and insults. Of which all these factors can affect productivity, scare customers and even reduce profit of a business. It is therefore advisable that women be given one to three days off from work to be fit on their return to work.

Studies have shown that women are not usually at their best during menstrual period and so should be granted off time during work.

Meanwhile, at some point in Nigeria a bill on gender equality was struck out; showing how impossible it will be to adopt the menstrual leave law. Though this study is out to know how possible it will be to adopt the menstrual leave law.

  1. Statement of the Problem

Overtime, we experience low productivity at work due to the fact that some women are down due to menstrual cramps.

In addition, some women during their menstrual flow show an act of rudeness to their customers thereby scaring them away.

However, some refuse showing up at work cause they don’t want to be embarrassed.
