1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The introduction of E-learning learning in educational sector of most of the developing countries of the world has improved the learning processes in these countries (Horton, 2005).

Horton (2005) defined e-learning as the use of internet and digital technologies to create experiences that educate our fellow human beings. E-learning has the potential to revolutionise the way we teach and how we learn (DfES, 2003). The educational sector of Nigeria is on the increase in terms of educational achievement with the introduction of advanced learning processes.

According to Abimbade (2002) educational technology vis-à-vis instructional technology whether as a field of education or new terminology to what has been there before like teaching aids or apparatus, as it was earlier called but recent achievements in the field of computer and communication technologies have offered tremendous opportunities for learning by electronic means (Rozina, 2002). Therefore, the world of technology continued to grow and today the whole world has become a global village. By the beginning of the 21st millennium educational technology has stretched educational boundaries and created new ones on a daily basis. One of these new and rapidly expanding boundaries is e-learning which is offering tremendous advantage to education sector.(Abimbade, 2002).

The introduction of new multimedia technologies and the Internet in teaching-learning relationship has been seen as a means to improve accessibility, efficiency and quality of learning by facilitating access to information resources and services as well as remote exchanges and collaboration. Nonetheless, by the middle of the 20th century the growth in technology and applications even in the field of education has been unavoidable to be overlooked. It has been found that students in higher educational institutions that engaged in E-Learning, generally performed better than those in face-to-face courses. (Holley, 2002) found that students who participate in online/ E-Learning achieve better grades than students who studied traditional approach. As result of this finding E- learning is growing very fast and become popular and that is why many higher educational institutions are adopting to virtual learning system. In some universities, their E-learning does not add any value to the teaching and learning activities of the University and perhaps they do not investigate the advancement of E-learning to education. However the study in this regard wishes to examine the advancement of E-learning to education in Nigeria.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Often time, the students are found to be the highest set of customers patronizing most of the side “computer training institute” and in turn, might not get the value of services they requested. This situation had been ascribed to many claims, in most occasions, had been made by both students and teachers on the pattern of teaching and learning respectively for instance, the students claim the greater percentage of the teachers have poor teaching communication skills, and likewise the teachers blame the inadequate teaching and learning facilities and/ or infrastructure as the reason for ineffective learning.

Hence, the problem centers on effective teaching and learning processes for the impacting and the advancement of the students’ theoretical and practical knowledge

1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The main aim of the research work is to examine the advancement of E-learning to education. Other specific objectives of the study include:

  1. to examine the relationship between E-learning and education

  5. to proffer solution to the above problems

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above objectives. The research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  1. What is the relationship between E-learning and education?
  2. What is the effect of E-learning on the academic performance of students?
  3. What are the role of E-learning in the teaching efficiency and learning processes in most schools in Nigeria?
  4. What are the factors affecting effective implementation of E-learning in most schools in Nigeria?

1.5 STATEMENT OF RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0: there is no significant relationship between E-learning and education in Nigeria

H1: there is significant relationship between E-learning and education in Nigeria

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study on the advancement of E-learning to education will be of immense benefit to the entire education sector as it will intimate the educational sectors on the importance of E-learning on the academic achievement in most schools in Nigeria. The study will be of great benefit to most of the societies in Nigeria as it will help curb computer illiteracy in Nigeria. Finally the study will be of immense assistance to other researchers that wishes to carry out similar research on the above topic.

1.7 SCOPE OF STUDY

The study on the advancement of E-learning to education will be limited to the educational sectors of Nigeria. The study will cover E-learning and the role of E-learning in the improvement of the educational sector of Nigeria.

1.8 LIMITATION OF STUDY

Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.
